Sunset View Elementary

Another year of ArtsBridge, and I was so excited for the opportunity to work with Mrs. Raymond's class of 6th Graders @ Sunset View Elementary!

Our first day together we explored Locomotor v. Axial and Floor Pathways for some big movement fun! We added some "spice" to them across the floor such as different levels, spatial relationships, and size of kinesphere.

Next, the students created their own "mind maps" around the word [FAMILY]

The ideas ranged from silly to heartfelt, and every day tasks to holiday traditions.

These students have assigned, mini work communities with specific jobs for each person in their classroom. They are experienced in group work!

Each group chose three words from their mind map to create a movement for. At first, the students fell back on pantomiming opposed to abstraction. After a discussion, some clarification, and class examples, the students were given new words/phrases relating to "family" to set abstract movement. The creativity began to fly!
